What to Include in a Metal Stamping RFQ

Created on 11.02
An effective metal stamping RFQ identifies the part, its functional requirements, the material and finish, the expected quantities and the documents needed for approval. Providing these details together helps the supplier review manufacturing feasibility and prepare a quotation with clearly stated assumptions.

Which drawings and files should you send?

Provide the latest controlled drawing and identify its part number, revision and units. Include a 3D model when it helps explain formed geometry, but make clear which document controls the requirements if files differ.
Highlight the dimensions and features that affect fit or function. Identify applicable datum references, tolerances, threads, assembly interfaces and drawing standards specified by your engineering team. If a dimension is for reference only, mark it accordingly.
A physical sample can help explain an existing part. Confirm whether it is a functional reference, a cosmetic reference or a sample that must be reproduced to an approved drawing.

What material and surface requirements are needed?

Specify the material grade, thickness and required condition or temper. If an alternative material may be considered, identify who must approve it before quotation or production.
State the required surface treatment, coating specification and relevant thickness requirements. Include any restrictions on contact areas, visible surfaces or subsequent assembly. Where applicable, identify burr direction, edge requirements, cleanliness and packaging needs.
These details should be agreed as part requirements, rather than left to assumptions based on a photograph.

How should quantities and delivery needs be described?

Separate prototype or sample quantities from the expected production demand. Provide the initial order quantity, forecast demand and expected order frequency when available.
Give the target dates for samples and production deliveries, and identify the delivery destination. Explain whether tooling already exists and whether its condition, ownership and transfer requirements have been agreed.
If the forecast is still being developed, label it as an estimate so the supplier can state the basis of its capacity and pricing assessment.

What inspection and approval documents should be included?

List the dimensional reports, material documentation and other records required for approval. Identify any customer-specific forms or sample approval process at the RFQ stage.
Ask the supplier to distinguish confirmed requirements from open questions in the quotation. Tooling charges, piece price assumptions, sample arrangements, packaging and delivery terms should be understandable before an order is placed.
