How to Review a Metal Component Supplier

Created on Today
A useful supplier review connects the requirements of your part with evidence from the manufacturing site that will produce it. A group presentation, equipment list or certificate can support the review, but each item should relate to the proposed project and site.
Compare suppliers using the same drawing revision, quantities, inspection requirements and commercial assumptions. This makes differences easier to identify and discuss.

Which company and manufacturing site will supply the part?

Confirm the legal entity responsible for the quotation and order, the production location and the contact responsible for technical questions. Ask which operations are performed at that site and which involve other facilities or external providers.
If a supplier presents group-wide capabilities, identify the resources available to your project. Group totals and the capacity of a specific production line answer different questions.

Does the proposed process fit your drawing?

Ask the supplier to review the material, dimensions, tolerances, geometry and required finish. General process ranges do not establish that every combination of material, shape and tolerance is feasible.
Discuss tooling arrangements, key manufacturing steps and any open technical questions. Where appropriate, use samples or an agreed trial to evaluate the requirements that are important to assembly and performance.

What quality evidence should you review?

Request the certificates relevant to the proposed site and scope, and review the holder, certification body, validity and current status. ISO develops standards; certificates are issued by external certification bodies. Verification may involve contacting the issuing body or consulting an applicable verification database.
Agree the inspection plan, sample approval requirements and records needed for your part. A management system certificate does not replace a part-specific acceptance process.

How should production and delivery be assessed?

Provide the expected order quantity, demand forecast and delivery pattern. Ask how the supplier plans to support them, including material purchasing, tooling readiness, production scheduling and inspection.
Distinguish sample timing from recurring production delivery. If demand may change, explain the expected variation and ask how revised requirements will be reviewed.

What should be clear in the quotation?

Check that the quotation identifies its drawing revision and assumptions. Compare tooling charges, piece prices, inspection requirements, packaging, delivery terms and the treatment of design changes.
Record unresolved technical or commercial points before committing to production. The purpose is to establish a shared understanding of the part and the supply arrangement.
